Why do you need a filming assistant?

Many photographers and videographers no longer use the services of an assistant. "What for? The camera has enough light, as one photographer told us, I’ll carry the backpack myself.” In this article we will tell you whether the presence of an assistant affects the quality of work and why we still follow this good old tradition.

1. An assistant in our case is also a person who helps with posing so that each photo and video shot looks different. The photographer is primarily responsible for the technical part, for the physics of light.
2. Communication. Creates a light atmosphere and mood during shooting while the photographer is getting ready. This is important when the models are children or you are photographing people who are not professional models and you need to help them relax and behave naturally.
3. He or she monitors the client's appearance. You know how frustrating it is when the shot is good, but some detail can ruin everything. So, the assistant makes sure that this does not happen. Believe me, not everything can be photoshopped to look realistic.
4. The most important point. The assistant helps direct the light at the desired angle using additional light sources. And the point is not whether the camera has enough light. The head-on flash shot is full of light. It just doesn't look so nice. All because there is no play of light. The eye has no reason left for imagination, nothing to latch on to. Even natural light needs to be used correctly and directed in our favor. You can create cool shots with shadows in harsh sunny colors and illuminate your face in rainy weather. One day, one photographer with whom we photographed a wedding said that he usually puts people in the shade and he’s ok. When we started talking about the possibilities of light, he simply wasn’t interested. “Oh, what a scorching sun, everything will burn! Oh, what a wind! He kept repeating it during the shooting! As if creating a reason in advance that can be cited in case of poorly performed work. It’s clear now why many people prefer not to use an assistant. Perhaps they are more interested in another part of the filming. Movement, communication, connections, but not the physics of light. And light, even in 2022, remains the basis of photography and video; it cannot be ignored, solving the problem with shadow.
